How to Clean Stainless Steel Countertops

by Anthony Taylor | Last Updated: January 14, 2022

How to Clean Stainless Steel CountertopsAs a rule, a stainless-steel worktop is the best choice for a commercial kitchen in a cafe or restaurant. There are several reasons for this: it is easy to clean, difficult to ruin or cut, and is safe for food.

However, human’s hands can ruin anything. In addition, such countertops have become in high demand in residential buildings and apartments, which means that people have to learn how to handle such an important part of the house. But first, let’s take a look at the merits and demerits of this subject.

Pros and Cons

Easy to wash
You can put hot dishes
It is not scary to spill food
No seams where bacteria can grow
With regular cleaning, there will be no rust, corrosion and other metal problems
Plain water stains, so the surface should ALWAYS be wiped off with a dry cloth so that it does not tarnish or lose its pleasant appearance
Easy to scratch. Scratches are more visible on this surface than on stone or wood
Easy enough to wrinkle. Dents cannot be repaired on their own; a metal specialist is required for this
Fingerprints visible
So, you can see that the stainless steel countertop has both many advantages and many disadvantages. Therefore, you need to thoughtfully approach the issue of choosing a home countertop.

Stainless Steel Countertops – cleaning tools

The most important thing in cleaning such a countertop is to preserve its presentable appearance. As it‘s very easy to scratch, avoid using metal sponges or rags that are too hard, which can leave micro-scratches on the surface.

Use a microfiber sponge and paper towels to dry the countertop. These tools will keep your desk safe for a long time.

In terms of hygiene products, you’d better use a gel-based soap. You can even use a window cleaner to give your countertop a polish. But then rinse the surface with water to remove harmful particles on it.

Manufacturers also produce special products for stainless steel countertops.

Saving the surface in order

Maintaining the surface of a stainless steel countertop is a simple but tedious task. First and foremost, you must make sure you don’t scratch the object.

If there are scratches on the surface, there are two ways to get rid of them:

  • Using a nylon sanding pad (for very fine scratches)
  • Find a specialist (unfortunately, only a specially trained person can help get rid of large scratches on the metal).
Otherwise, these countertops don’t require much maintenance. The main thing is to continue to regularly clean the surface and not leave water there.

If you do find a rusty stain on your countertop, use a baking soda paste or a special rust stain remover.

We use these countertops in our small family cafe. It is not a pity to spill food or water on them, they can also be cut and sprinkled with spices. Will withstand absolutely everything!

Yes, there are always a lot of scratches and finger stains on such a surface. But, by the way, simple napkins for monitor screens are good at erasing any prints. The scratches won’t go away, of course, but the shine will return.
